9th Annual Millstadt Optimist Club BBQ/Chili Cook-off A Huge Success
The 9th annual BBQ/Chili Cook-off sponsored by the Millstadt Optimist Club was a huge success with an estimated of 3500 to 4000 in attendance. There seemed to be just as many people in Liederkranz Park for this cook-off as there was for the homecoming. And why not? There was some great food to be had and the weather was absolutely perfect for this time of the year. You could find everything from snoots, ribs, pork steaks, and of course a large variety of chili. No one should have went home hungry, and everyone should have had their taste buds completely satisfied.
The proceeds derived from this event went to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research. *The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International is the leader in setting the agenda for type 1 diabetes research worldwide, and is the world's largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly, but lasts a lifetime. It requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation, and pregnancy complications. JDRF was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with type 1 diabetes. As a result, JDRF volunteers have a personal connection to type 1 diabetes, which translates into an unrelenting commitment to finding a cure. These volunteers are the driving force behind more than 100 locations worldwide that raise money and advocate for government spending for type 1 diabetes research.
Brian from the Optimist Club said that 90% of the contest participants donated their winning back to the organization for JDRF. The group Tres Amigas donated all of their proceeds back to organization. “Wood Choppers” won the “best display” award. Now to get to the winners of this year’s BBQ/Chili Cook-off:
