DIG PINK!

Lady Tigers Host Volleyball Game for Breast Cancer Awareness

On Thursday evening September 17th at the Dupo Community High School gymnasium a lot more than volleyball games will be taking place.  Yes the Dupo Lady Tigers Volleyball team will be hosting Cahokia Conference rival the Valmeyer Lady Pirates in volleyball action.  But the game is part of a national effort sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation to raise funds and awareness to battle breast cancer. The national effort titled ‘Dig Pink’ involves college and high school volleyball teams across the nation as well as a festival in Orlando, Florida October 2nd and 3rd. I asked Dupo Lady Tigers Varsity Volleyball Coach Jill Puckett how her team became involved.  “We noticed some other teams we played last year with the pink t-shirts promoting the event and decided that it was something that we wanted to be a part of.  We’re pretty excited about it.”

The Side-Out Foundation (Side-Out) was established in 2004 by a group of individuals drawn together by their love of volleyball, but who also share a similar passion to be a part of the war against breast cancerSide-Out’s mission is to raise money for the war against breast cancer through the recreational activity of volleyball.  Their objectives for 2009 are;

Raise $1,000,000 for Breast Cancer.

Create Side-Out Foundation Clinical Trials based on Molecular Profiling and Targeted Therapies

Create the Side-Out Foundation Tumor Bank

Recruit 3000 teams to participate in Dig Pink events throughout the year.

As for the ‘Dig Pink’ night at Dupo High, preparations have been underway for some time.  The team had pink themed t-shirts made for the event and sold over 200 of them at the school with all proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation.  Beginning Monday, September 14th, the schools announcements each day will contain information about breast cancer.  On Wednesday and Thursday, September 16th and 17th the Volleyball team will be sponsoring a bake sale at the school. Coach Puckett is also hopeful that they will be able to hold an assembly for the students with games and activities designed to educate students about breast cancer.  At the game itself there will be raffles, 50/50 ticket sales and other opportunities to give towards the fight against breast cancer.  Coach Puckett added, “Our girls are so pumped about it!  We just got our pink volleyball in and we’ll be using that to play the game next Thursday. So it’s pretty cool!  We just hope as many people as possible can come out and join us in supporting this great cause.”
