On Thursday evening September 17th at the Dupo Community High School gymnasium a lot more than volleyball games will be taking place. Yes the Dupo Lady Tigers Volleyball team will be hosting Cahokia Conference rival the Valmeyer Lady Pirates in volleyball action. But the game is part of a national effort sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation to raise funds and awareness to battle breast cancer. The national effort titled ‘Dig Pink’ involves college and high school volleyball teams across the nation as well as a festival in Orlando, Florida October 2nd and 3rd. I asked Dupo Lady Tigers Varsity Volleyball Coach Jill Puckett how her team became involved. “We noticed some other teams we played last year with the pink t-shirts promoting the event and decided that it was something that we wanted to be a part of. We’re pretty excited about it.”
The Side-Out Foundation (Side-Out) was established in 2004 by a group of individuals drawn together by their love of volleyball, but who also share a similar passion to be a part of the war against breast cancer. Side-Out’s mission is to raise money for the war against breast cancer through the recreational activity of volleyball. Their objectives for 2009 are;
Raise $1,000,000 for Breast Cancer.
Create Side-Out Foundation Clinical Trials based on Molecular Profiling and Targeted Therapies
Create the Side-Out Foundation Tumor Bank
Recruit 3000 teams to participate in Dig Pink events throughout the year.
