Co-Captains Raising Money for Trip to New York and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
Tina Schifferdecker loves to dance. So does Ciara Amsden and the eight other girls who comprise the Dupo High School Dance Force. They love to dance so much that they work very hard at it spending time after school or in the evenings during the school year preparing for competitions and performances at school events. They even spend part of their summer trying to improve their team, their skills and their routines. All of this while being a student.

The team went to dance camp at St Louis University this summer to learn new routines, participate in team building programs, games and other activities. The camp helps them develop skills like showmanship, facials (smiling, having fun), stiff (crisp, clean) movement, visuals (creativity, flash) and technique (difficulty). The Dupo High School Dance Force will be competing at the DuQuoin State Fair on Saturday, August 29th to show what they’ve learned thus far. There will be cash awards for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place teams.
In addition to all the work, instruction and preparation given to the teams, Dance Camp also provides an opportunity for team captains to take part in the historical Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. An opportunity that Dupo Dance Force Co-Captains Tina Schifferdecker and Ciara Amsden would love to take. Tina said, “We’ve decided to go so we’re trying to raise money for the trip. We’ll be there for six days. Working on a routine for the parade with other captains from all over the United States. We get to work with a professional choreographer and we’ll also get to tour New York and see some of the sights there.” How does this benefit the team? Ciara responded, “We believe that the experience of working with dance professionals and the best team members from across the country is something we can bring back to our team. What we learn there, we’ll share here.”

While it’s a great opportunity, it’s also an expensive one. The girls need at least $2500.00 a piece to go. So far they have raised $300.00. The girls could use both corporate sponsorships as well as private donations. They are selling Partylite products, planning BBQs and possibly a fund raiser at Wal-Mart. They need to have their money raised and turned in by September 15th.
