The Dupo Tigers Varsity Boys Basketball Team opened their season last week at the 29th Annual Metro East Lutheran High School Thanksgiving Tip-Off Classic in Edwardsville. The tournament is in pool play format with four teams in each pool. How you perform in your pool decides what game you play in the finals.

After leading for three quarters the Dupo High School Lady Tigers Varsity Basketball team watched their lead disappear as the Lady Knights of Metro East Lutheran High came back to outscore the Lady Tigers 17-6 in the final quarter to win the game 46-37 and take Third Place at the Dupo High School Cat Classic Basketball Tournament.

One week after the Dupo Quarterback Club Varsity Tigers completed their perfect regular season with a come from behind victory over the Columbia Blue Jays 28-13 and finished the season a perfect 9-0, the Pinckneyville Panthers came to town on Sunday and ruined the Tigers’ bid for a perfect season. The Southwest Illinois Football Conference Varsity championship game was played at the Dupo Quarterback Club football field as the Pinckneyville Panthers defeated the Tigers 40-21. The Tigers finished the season in second place with a record of 9-1.

For the first half of the Dupo 8th Grade Basketball Tigers game against the Eagles of Brussels, Illinois it seemed that the Tigers were on their way to their third win of the season and a 3-1 record. But the Eagles had a different plan in mind and outscored the Tigers 29-7 in the second half to win the game 41-28.

Back in August of this year the Dupo Athletic Department began a new seasonal effort to acquaint fans with the players and coaches of the schools various athletic teams. On Friday night, November 13th, the Tigers unveiled their winter sports teams for the community. Titled “Meet the Tigers” it not only gives parents and fans an opportunity to see who’s playing and coaching, but it also helps to cultivate an atmosphere of excitement for the upcoming season.

While the games won’t count against the Dupo Jr High teams records, don’t tell that to the players. Dupo 8th Grade Boys Basketball Coach Kraig Roth said, “Well technically they’re not a school but it’s a good game to have early on our schedule.” Both teams came out fired up and determined to win. But in the end it was the offensive power of the RJ Krause All Stars that prevailed as they defeated the 8th Grade Tigers 67-58.

The Lady Tigers who were seeded 4th in the Regional drew 5th seed Madison in the first round with the winner facing the number one seeded Valmeyer Lady Pirates.

The Yellow jackets finished the season 7-2 and will host the Tigers’ Cahokia Conference foe, Red Bud Musketeers, in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A playoffs.

The Tigers played a good game against the Midgets but could not seem to stop Freeburg’s potent spread offense as they exploited the Tiger defense again and again for big plays especially in third down situations.

The hapless Warriors who are plagued by injuries remain winless in the conference as they dropped to 1-4 overall.
