It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Dupo Tigers Varsity Football as they watched their hopes for a winning season and playoff berth tick away at the end of the fourth quarter Friday night. The Tigers played a good game against the Midgets but could not seem to stop Freeburg’s potent spread offense as they exploited the Tiger defense again and again for big plays especially in third down situations. Freeburg quarterback Alex Fricke may have done the most damage as he went 9-15, for 189 yards and threw for two touchdowns and added another 65 yards rushing on 14 carries. But the difference maker for the Midgets was running back Tyler Adamson who rushed for 162 yards on 9 carries with two touchdowns. Both touchdowns coming at crucial points in the third and fourth quarters with Dupo threatening.
Being the last home game for the Tigers this year it was Senior night. Senior football players, cheerleaders, statisticians and Dance Force members were honored before the game. Senior Tiger running back Joe Higgerson had an outstanding night again rushing for 149 yards on 29 carries and one touchdown. Although the ‘Thunder and Lightning’ combination of Higgerson and Senior Matt Ragsdale never got into full swing, Ragsdale had two touchdowns, one by way of the pass and one by rushing. The Tigers also had significant contributions from Sean Pierce, Tyler Maynard and Cody Primas. Dupo Tiger Head Coach Vernon Ferry said, “The last two week=s Sean Pierce has really stepped up his game. He has been a clutch player.”
In previous pieces this season I have mentioned the play of the Tiger offensive line. This will be no exception today. Senior guard Dylan Carner was out of school all week with the flu and making his first varsity start in Dylan’s place was his cousin, Freshman Chris Carner. Chris did an excellent job in his cousins place and gives Tigers fans a reason to look toward the future. Coach Ferry said, “Our guys never quit all night, the effort was there. We just got beat by a better football team.”
