Jr. Lady Tigers Snuff Out Comets!

Dupo 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team Gets First Win of the Season

The Dupo 8th Grade Lady Tigers Basketball team notched their first win of the season beating the Marissa Comets 38-18 on their home floor at Bluffview Elementary School.  The win puts the teams record at 1-3 as they are preparing for a challenging stretch of their season.  Dupo 8th Grade Lady Tigers basketball Coach Jason Waller said, “The girls are making great strides.   They’re beginning to understand what we want to do on defense and it’s beginning to pay dividends. I coach the girls to leave it all out on the floor and win or lose you won’t have any regrets.  That’s basically the way life is also.  I want to teach them more than just basketball, we can throw in some life lessons on the way.”

The 8th Grade Lady Tigers used aggressive defense to create turnovers, which then led to Tiger points.  Their man to man trap press was extremely effective and frustrated the Lady Comets.  Coach Waller said, “We’re a very small team, we’ve only got two post players.  We’ve got to rely on defense, we can’t let teams set up their offense.  So hopefully we’ll get a lot of points turning it over on defense.”  The 8th Grade Lady Tigers led 14-4 after the 1st quarter and extended their lead to 22-9 at halftime.  After three quarters the game was out of reach for Marissa as Dupo led 36-13.  Dupo pulled their starters in the fourth quarter to give their bench some quality minutes and won the game 38-18.

The 8th Grade Lady Tigers were led by guard Alexandra (Sissy) Brown, who led all scorers with 14 points and was 2 for 2 at the free throw line.  Brown seemed to find herself in position for the steal frequently and scored on several breakaway layups.  Coach Waller said of Brown, “Sissy has been really playing well.  We’ve been preaching layups in practice and it’s beginning to show on the floor.”  She was followed closely by forward Kaitlyn Butler, who scored 10 points.  Butler was a force inside rebounding and scored mostly on putbacks after rebounds.  Coach Waller said, “Kaitlyn is a talented athlete.  She’s got all the talent in the world she’s just got to tie it to the court now.”

The Jr Lady Tigers will host the Chester Jr Lady Yellowjackets on Thursday, November 12th, 7th Grade starts at 5:00 p.m. with the 8th Grade game to follow.  Then the Jr Lady Tigers 8th Grade squad will take on the Lady Panthers of Millstadt in the MCS Shootout on Saturday, November 14th, at 6:20 p.m.  Coach Waller added, “Our goal is to get better week to week.  We’re 1-3 after tonight, I’d like to be 3-3 by the end of the week.
