Meet the Tigers!

New Seasonal Event Proving Successful for Dupo Athletics

Back in August of this year the Dupo Athletic Department began a new seasonal effort to acquaint fans with the players and coaches of the schools various athletic teams.  On Friday night, November 13th, the Tigers unveiled their winter sports teams for the community.  Titled “Meet the Tigers” it not only gives parents and fans an opportunity to see who’s playing and coaching, but it also helps to cultivate an atmosphere of excitement for the upcoming season.

The “Meet the Tigers” events are the brainchild of new Dupo School District Superintendent Terry Milt.  I asked Superintendent Milt how it all came about and he responded, “It kind of came from past places that I’ve been, it’s something to start the season off right, give the kids a little notoriety.  Maybe get fans to want to come out and see the kids play, because there’s an awful lot of people who miss out on some great entertainment at the High School level when they don’t come out to watch these kids play.”

Winter teams and activities recognized included the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshmen boys basketball teams, the Varsity and Junior Varsity girls basketball teams, the Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading squads, the Danceforce squad, the Jr High boys basketball A & B squads and the Jr High girls basketball A & B squads.

Members and coaches of each squad were introduced individually as fans cheered their entrance on the court.  Once all of the teams were assembled and recognized the girls and boys basketball teams engaged in a little fun.  A contest was held to see which teams could make the most free throws and the most 3-pointers, the Jr High girls versus the Jr High boys and the Sr High girls versus the Sr High boys.  The boys won all of the contests but one as the Sr High girls beat the Sr High boys in the free throw contest.

I asked Superintendent Milt if he feels the events have been a success and how have the students been responding.  He said, “The community has said it’s been a success, so I guess that’s a pretty good measure.  We hope that it does help to increase the spirit among the students as well. We hope that the students will take pride in the fact that they’re wearing a Tiger uniform.”
