The St James Catholic Church of Millstadt held their annual ‘Schlachtfest’ Saturday, October 3rd. Although the weather was cool people came out to enjoy the harvest time event. The afternoon and evening were filled with food, games, and raffles. There was something for everyone regardless of how young or old you may be. Perhaps the best part of the event was the socializing and fellowship among parishioners and their guests.
The term ‘Schlachtfest’ is German, schlacht meaning slaughter. So it is basically a festival built around harvest time and the slaughter of livestock. St James Catholic Church Parish employee Don Steppig gave me some history of the event. “Many years ago farmers and parish members would gather here at the church to slaughter their pigs and livestock at this time of year. They would do the butchering here on the parish grounds, make sausage and other meats and have a meal together and so over the years it grew into a festival.”
The day’s events included raffles, game booths, bingo as well as various produce, meats, vegetables, canned goods and baked goods for sale. All money raised at the event goes to the church and school.
