The St James Lady Trojans basketball team opened play in the Althoff Feeder Tournament with a dominant win over the Lady Titans of Holy Trinity 44-12. The Lady Trojans, who are the #2 seed in the tournament, were scheduled to face the winner of Saturday’s game between Queen of Peace and St Teresas at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. If they were able to win that contest they will play in the championship game next Sunday, February 21st, at 3:30 p.m.
From the outset of Saturday’s game it was clear that the Holy Trinity Lady Titans were overmatched. The Lady Titans could not match the Lady Trojans athleticism or skill as the Lady Trojans ran away with the game early winning 13-0 after the first quarter. The Lady Trojans, who usually like to open fast using the full court press to create turnovers, stayed in their half court defense for the entire game. St James Lady Trojans Coach Kevin Colbert said, We played fast initially but when we got a considerable lead we decided to slow things down and work on our half court offense.” Coach Colbert went to his bench early but it made little difference to the Lady Titans who still had difficulty scoring as St James extended their lead to 25-6 at the half.
The second half was more of the first as Coach Colbert divided his team into two squads with a few starters on each and played them that way until midway through the fourth quarter when he benched all of his starters. Coach Colbert said, “We got a lot of kids a lot of playing time today. Everybody played, all of our eighth graders scored. All 10 of our kids played well and did what we asked them to do.” The Lady Trojans played a slower game than they would normally, but it was still too much for the Lady Titans who were still down 35-8 after three quarters. The dominance continued in the fourth quarter as the Lady Trojans won 44-12.
Scoring was balanced for the Lady Trojans as a number of players found their way into the scoring column. Maddie Weilbacher had 7 points and Alexis Colbert had 6 points and the scoring was rounded out by a number of players with 5 and 4 points each. Coach Colbert said, “We have a tendency to not play as hard against teams like this but we came out today and played well offensively and defensively.”
