Before I share the story of Wanda Sins, I would like to thank Wanda for her service to our country. Society labels professional athletes, and movie stars, and the likes as hero’s, but the true hero’s of our country are people like Wanda, who put their lives on the line for our freedom. So from my whole heart, thank you Wanda!
The students of Millstadt Consolidated Primary Center welcomed back custodian Wanda Sins who served in Kuwait for the last 8 months as a LS (Logistic Specialist) under a Customs Mission from Navel SG from Norfolk, VA. Now you may be wondering what an LS is and what do they do? Wanda was part of a team that made sure items, such as destructive weapons did not pass through customs. Many of these weapons could potentially make their way to the streets, and that could be disastrous. Also military equipment is shipped back home that has to be inspected and accounted for, that was part of Wanda’s responsibility. When I asked Wanda about any specific experience from her tour of duty, she spoke about how the Kuwaiti people appreciated the presence of the military and what they are doing.
Wanda serves in the Navy with the rank of 1st Class (E-6), of which she may soon be promoted to Chief. She served 5 years in active duty and 17 years in the reserves out of NOSC in St. Louis, MO. Wanda shipped out April 19th, 2009 to the Navel SG in Norfolk, VA and was shipped out to the Kuwait Naval Base (KNB) on May 31st, 2009. She returned on March 5th, but before she got acclimated to civilian life she took her children Nicole (24), Chris (19), and Josh (18) to Jamaica for 5 days for vacation.
Wanda comes from a long line of military personnel in her family with her father serving in WWII, a brother in Vietnam, nephews in Iraq and Desert Storm in Kuwait. She also has a relative, Joey Avellone, who is a paralyzed vet that served as a Marine who is running for state legislation.
Wanda is now settled back in to the normal routine of civilian life, and is glad to be back home. If you get the opportunity to thank Wanda for her service to our country, do so, for she truly is an American hero. Thanks Again, Wanda!
